The Good, The Bad and The Queen

Who is Damon Albarn

The Good, The Bad and the QueenDamon Albarn was born on March 23, 1968 in Leytonstone, London. Here, he and his sister Jessica received a very liberal upbringing. At the age of 10 his family moved to Aldham, Essex, England so that his father could pursue his teaching career. It was while in school here at Stanway Comprehensive School that he met his future guitarist Graham Coxon. Both Graham and Damon really enjoyed similar bands, such as The Jam, The Kinks and The Human League.

How did The Good The Bad and The Queen started?

After finishing secondary school, Damon took up writing and performing music. Then in May 2006 Damon created an unnamed alternative rock band in collaboration with Paul Simonon from The Clash, Simon Tong from The Verve and Tony Allen from Fela Kuti. This qualified the yet unnamed band as a super group. Together they released their first single, “Herculean” on October 30, 2006.

TGTBTQ Debut Album

Their debut album was entitled The Good, the Bad and the Queen. Damon was a singer on this album which was originally recorded as a solo album with Danger Mouse producing. However, in late July 2006 the solo project had been switched to Damon’s new group. The album was then released in January 2007 and debuted at #2 in the UK Albums Chart. Within days of its release this album was also certified gold in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately this album only received a small degree of media recognition and airplay. This album did enter the U.S. Billboard 200 at #49. It is not surprising that this is where it stopped in the U.S. since this album is actually a concept album with all of its songs being centered around modern life in London.

The first live performances of TBTGTQ

On October 26 the band made its first appearance at the BBC’s Electric Proms season at the redeveloped Roundhouse in Camden. Here they performed the entire The Good, The Bad And The Queen album. This culminated in their performance on the BBC’s Electric Proms, where they performed the entire album with 2 other songs inserted: “Intermission Jam” and “Mr. Whippy”.

The band’s second major gig took place on December 12, 2006 at Wilton’s Music Hall in East London. This gig was held in front of 300 specially selected fans and led to the launch of MySpace’s The List. Then on April 4, 2007, The Good, the Bad and the Queen became the first EMI album to be made available for download in the new DRM-free, high quality MP3 format (320 kbit/s) as well as also being the first EMI record to be released DRM-free on iTunes.
